AT WHAT AGE DO YOU THINK PARENTS SHOULD STOP CATERING FOR THEIR CHILDREN AND WHY?

Violet Omokodion:   At the age of 25 a child should leave his parent’s house and be up and doing. We know in this part of the world it is difficult to get a job immediately after school and get the basic things needed to live a good life, but it’s still necessary that an adult should plan his or her life, especially plan to leave his parents at a certain age because it is assumed you have finished your higher institution, working and responsible enough to take care of yourself without having to bother your guardians or parents.

Promise Nath-Chigbu:  At the age of 20 a boy or girl is no longer a child but an adult and should be doing something to earn him money no matter how small it is. This will give him a sense of responsibility. When a child is doing something in order to cater for himself, his parents shouldn’t completely ignore him because they think he is old enough. In fact, that’s the time to cater for them to ensure they don’t take the wrong steps by engaging in juvenile activities in an attempt to earn respect for himself.

Olutunde Akande:  A boy or girl of 25 is no longer a child and should not rely on his parents for everything. The truth is, only few adults are comfortable running to their parents every now and then for their every need. In civilized countries a child of 25 is already living on his own and taking responsibility for everything but it’s quite unfortunate that is not the case in Nigeria for some clear reasons. However, catering for a child depends on the laid down principles of the parents. Some parents inculcate the habit of letting their children take responsibility at certain age and this helps them know when it is the right time to act responsible at every point in time. When you stop catering for your adult, you help that adult think and take decisions that would better his life and by extension the society.

Jacob Samuel:  Parents must continue to cater for their children until their last breath. Children tend to go astray if their parents are not there to keep a close watch on them. This doesn’t make the child irresponsible, it just keeps the child on check. Whether you are an adult or child, your parents still have to correct you at some point. Parents who do not cater for their children thinking they are old enough will later realize that an uncompleted building is not yet a place of abode. There is a proverb that says “A child is not a finished material to change the story of the family for good but just an investment of blessing for their old age when their bones are weak and feeble”.

Isaiah Oluwasogo: When a child becomes an adult I believe it is time to let his parents allow him experience life on his own while guiding him through it. If you have to cater for your child from childhood to adulthood, then you are not in any way helping that child grow. Teach them all they need to live their lives and continue teaching them even after they have left you to be on their own. Make sure you have done your part as parents.

Adetunji Samson Olajide:  There should never be a time parents should stop catering for their children. Parenting is a life-time affair, starting from birth. A perfect example is our creator; He never stops catering for us even when we think we are old enough to handle issues on our own, He never stops catering. A child must continue to be catered for by his parents in all ramifications. That doesn’t mean the child should not know what he should do for his life or should not have plans as to how he will want his life to go for his good.
